350mm Trident or 2.4

Hello everyone.

I am new to Voron but have a few years of experience in the overall hobby. I am interested in building a larger printer. I have a few projects saved that are on the larger side. I want to be able to print them on my own without be having to source them out to someone else that has a larger printer.

I am still in the process of researching this build. With that being said, I have heard it mentioned that if you are going for a 350mm, you should consider the 2.4 over the Trident due to stability and the bulk of the weight staying at the bottom.

Is this something I should consider or is this extra precaution?

I am interested in what everyone has to say about this.

Thanks!

At that size, the 2.4 is probably the better option. The Trident uses leadscrews for bed movement, so if I recall is typically a 350x350 XY and 250 Z. You also have that really big, heavy bed sitting at the top of the printer; the 2.4 with the static bed on the bottom will be more stable.

We are missing some benefits from the Trident though, and I would argue that the bed position is negligible IMO.

If you are doing warmer materials, the Trident has an advantage of printing in the warmer air so it's less time to start a print (heat rises) whereas a 2.4 you have to wait for the heat to get all the way to the bottom of the chamber

The setup and maintenance of a Trident is somewhat more simple and easy due to the less moving gantry parts and less belts.

I want this printer to be able to do just about anything within reason. Not any specific materials specifically but where I live the heat resistant materials will be helpful in some regard.

One of the projects that I have saved is a piece that is 310x310. It’s pretty thin so cutting it in the slicer and reattaching it makes it a bit challenging.

I could probably orient the file a little bit and be able to handle it with a 300mm printer but if I am going through the process of building one……that doesn’t make much sense when the larger printer is an option.

Again, just doing some research and getting input from the community.
