Voron as a project for me?

Hello everyone,

I've recently become interested in building a Voron and wanted to get some input before I spend any money.

For some background, I've been chronically sick for some years now and expect that to continue for the time being as well.
As such, I'm more or less confined to my home and have lots of time with nothing to do.
When I saw that building a Voron takes dozens of hours, you get to tune it afterwards, and you can build mods for it, I immediately got interested in building one myself.
I'm also very comfortable with building and wiring stuff up, so I don't think that part should be too much of a challenge.

I do have a few concerns, however. Mainly that I'm very sensitive to noise and worried that fumes from printing could worsen my health.
I've done some reading, and I think I should be good if I add a Nevermore and an HEPA filter. But how loud can I expect the printer to be?
Lastly, how do those restrictions impact my choice of printing material? Could I still print PLA, or would that require much more cooling, which in turn would make the printer rather loud?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Roger,

Sorry to hear you are not in good health!

From my own experience, my Voron 2.4 is a very quiet printer when compared to the likes of my old Ender 3. To drop the decibels even further there are plenty of things you can do to achieve this.

For fumes / plastic particulates, there is a good series of filters now available. For PLA you could run with your door slightly open and an extraction fan via a filter running - creates a negative pressure in the chamber so any exhaust should go via the hepa filters while keeping the chamber relatively cool. For ABS - you will have to have a fully sealed chamber and run an internal filtration system of which there are some brilliant designs now available.

Anything is possible and there is a proliferation of new modifications coming through to solve the two questions you are asking. (Nevermore Stealthmax filters / Clicky Clack fridge door mod)

It really comes down to time, budget and the energy to complete the project.

Sorry about your health. A Voron build can definitely fill a lot of your time.

The noisiest part of my Trident was the electronics cooling fans and I resolved that by swapping them out for Noctua fans. Now the printer is reasonably quiet--I can have it running nearby while on a phone call and never once has the noise been mentioned. My daughter and a niece are somewhat sound sensitive and have never complained about the printer running.

For fumes, first of all, don't be right by the printer when running as a precaution. I run PLA near me and so far no issues. ABS is enclosed and I use a Nevermore. For a more thorough solution you could set up an extractor system to vent the printer air outside.

Energy will be the biggest hurdle for me but I'm optimistic about that. If nothing else, I'll get to work on it for longer :)

From what I've seen most mods (nevermore, clicky door) that would be important for me are available for both the 2.4 and the Trident. Is there anything available for only one of them that I should look into before deciding on one? Or can I just get whichever I like more?

The only exclusive mod that comes to my mind immediately is the one that adds side parts cooling fans for the Trident, since its gantry is stationary on the Z axis: https://www.printables.com/model/570662-voron-trident-auxiliary-fan This one could be useful when printing PLA.

The vast majority of V2 mods are applicable to Trident. As VInny indicates, really only stuff that specifically relates to the moving gantry would not work. There are several mods that have a Trident variation available, too. I have lots of V2 mods on my Trident.

Building one of these isn't a race, take however long it takes you. I know there was one build that took about a year to get complete since his time was limited.
