Uploaded a video to YT of test driving one proto unit of a modular filament driver/ changer system under development.
Long (almost 2800mm) filament path of my 400x400x800 build V2.4 kinda requires something to help the toolhead extruder.
Even though there are all kinds of interesting solutions already available decided to try my take on these.
Also at the time starting to design this couldn’t find something that was on my mind.
Before project I tested a thing called ”Mellow LLL Filament Buffer” -feeder assistant.
But its feeding gears seemed to sometimes slip easily in my case even if full tight.
Also before filament reaching the toolhead, tiny motor on the thing sounded struggling almost stalling.
And eventually once when pushing filament in to the thing the tip somehow found its way to the pcb and ripped a hall-effect smc sensor and its traces off the board (R.I.P.).
So Nema17 stepper and large extruder gears got to be the starting point.
Components starting to find their places ended up with this modular concept:
Stay tuned for some filament changing test and printing action as soon as a second unit is ready.
Big Thanks to Klipper AFC-Add-on creator Armored Turtle team, got this running in no time with their easy to tweak cfg-files!
Check out also slow motion shots of BusySnail poopslinger in action on the channel, they look kind of cool.

Components starting to find their places ended up with this modular concept:
- A driver unit that attaches to a spool roller.
- Spool roller can be an open roller tray or a roller drybox with a lid.
- These units along with combiner hub/ feeding follower and controller board box and some brackets or feet can be joined together with threaded rods
Stay tuned for some filament changing test and printing action as soon as a second unit is ready.
