Solved Gaps in layers - Flow, or something else?

Laserbea4k43

Well-known member
Hi,
So I managed to get rid of some gaps in my layers by increasing flow in SS from 0.923 to 0.98. But the are still gaps.
In Cura, I was golden at 93-95%. Should I just set it to 1 (100%) or maybe even 1.3 to see if the issue goes away, or is it something else?
I'm test printing at .4mm layer height for speed and I'm concerned, going to .2mm will make things worse later.

Have you done a flow calibration test?
What size nozzle and what hotend are you using?

My flow is set to 1

I may have, can't remember. I'm feeling like I did that in Ellis' guide.
Phateus Rapido HF.
I've just printed an ABS version with no changes other than temperature. The results are the same.
I'll bump flow up to 1 and see.

So are you just using Cura?
Prusa or SS is much faster in general. You can set up Cura to be fast but out-of-the-box settings print extremely slowly for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Cura but you have to do so much tuning to get it right with the CoreXY.
Oh, and not sure about Prusa but Super Slicer has built-in Calibration tests.

There Flow test is great!

1 is much better (left my camera upstairs). I think I'll need to go to 1.1 or 1.2 though. It's possible that these lines are the result of my pressure advance settings, now that I think about it, since they happen around corners.
This is me trying to learn to use SS. My prints are 2x fast at least in SS.
Nice! Built in tests!! Noted!
I think i'm solved here, Thanks!

Top pic, I would try turning off PA and see what happens. What material, and speed are you printing?

Bottom pic is easy, prints came off the bed.

I'll try that.
Inland ABS, 110C Bed 255C hotend 50c peak temp in the chamber not sure what speed, in bed for a few hours, my long night ended this afternoon.
Bottom pic -"facepalm" I forgot to clean the lubricant off of the sheet, I disassembled the TAP in that area a few times...

  • OK, Scrubbed the sheet clean - so far, nothing's come loose from the plate.
  • Turned PA off.
  • Bed 110C
  • Nozzle 255C
  • Chamber ~50C
  • here are my speed settings:

OK bed adhesion issue gone, but I had to stop mid-print because it's still looking like this:

I would drop these two by say 20mm and see how that same part looks.
Might not make a difference and the little imperfection is near a bridge area so that is prob the issue. If it is you can turn the fan up a little for bridging and see if that helps.
